I am really happy to announce the launch of Kingdom Tunes. It is still in beta, but it is working for the most part and functioning well.

What is Kingdom Tunes? Kingdom Tunes is a group of Christian (Bible Believing Christ Following) Servant/Artists who have set aside a portion or all of their musical talents and recordings to be given and distributed freely to all who will have it. Kingdom Tunes is not a record label or a distributor of any sort. It is simply a place where Servant/Artists can freely give what was freely given to them, and thus making Kingdom Tunes also a place where anyone can access the music and art of those in the Servant/Artist group, and hopefully be inspired and blessed by the service.

This song is taken straight from the Lord's prayer found in Matthew 6. There is such a simple and powerful expression of adoration and worship that is reflected in these short lines. When I don't know what to pray and when I feel anxious, I just reflect on this prayer and God seems to put things into their right perspective.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Giving up my rights - Public Domain

Well, I have given this much thought. And, while I don't think that it will really change anything at all, I have decided to put all these songs and future songs into the "Public Domain".

What does this mean?

Well, previously, all songs were under a creative commons license that allowed people/artists to download, share, and even add to the music as long as credit was given to the contributing author and not made commercial. But as I thought about this I felt that even those loose restrictions are not suitable for this music or it's contents. So according to wiki, public domain is...

"an intellectual property designation for the range of content that is not owned or controlled by anyone. These materials are "public property", and available for anyone to use freely for any purpose."

It seems to work for me. Do I think everyone should go "Public"? I think everyone should seeks God and follow His leading on what to do with their art. For this art, this is it.

But what if someone takes your songs and makes a fortune off of them, and never gives you credit?

MY response is this: the glory in these songs is meant to point to Christ. So the glory, or credit, was not mine in the first place. So wherever these songs find themselves, they will always be giving credit where credit is due...GOD.

The only exception to the public domain for this site will be anything that I collaborate on with other artists. For those songs, I will be respectful of the licensing wishes of the other artist.

I have deep respect for this decision. I've thought for a long time that worship songs should be public domain, no matter who had written them. Of course, not being a worship song-writer, and thus not making a living from writing songs, I didn't wish to voice my opinion. On the other hand, I'm so glad that you've made this choice; I think it's a wonderful reminder that everything we have belongs to God, and that He'll take care of us when we rely on Him.

Servant's Heart

I wrote this one a while back, but I just recently finished it. The song is hopefully self explanatory. But I'll say a word too...

Broken people sharing a perfect message. As God fills us he sends us. As followers of Christ, we are called to share His love and message with the world around us. Even when we feel too broken or flawed to do so. But our shortcomings should not stand in the way of our service and outreach, because even our greatest abilities and our shiniest days fall way too short in comparison with Christ and His greatness. But God calls us and He sends us with His spirit so that we can become the hands, eyes, and feet of Christ to the weak the hurt and the broken.

So don't wait until you have your act together to serve and share God's love. Just ask God for His spirit which He freely gives. And His spirit will enable you do spread the good news with those around you, in a way that you could never do on your own.

I was going back over some old posts and this one stuck out. I thought I would release it again. Let me know your thoughts....

I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be a "Servant Artists". When you take those two words and put them together it's almost an oxymoron. Yet I feel like this is something that God is wrenching in my heart. Here what I mean...

“Servant”. Servants are concerned with one thing, their master. Everything the servant says and does is in service. That is, they do not think about how something will affect them, or to what loss it would be for them to serve. A servant's actions point to and honor those they serve. They are not concerned with fame or fortune, because that is not the fuel behind their deeds. They are driven by a heart of humility, debt, and gratefulness. They don't treat others as beneath them, but rather they lift them up. Self promotion is not in their vocabulary. They serve with confidence, not in their own gifts to serve but in the freedom of service they have been given.

"Artist". In a commercial sense, artists strive to be noticed. They must be noticed to survive. Being seen and heard is what makes them important. Humility is just another label that is used for promotion. In this sense artists must always be selling themselves. This is what I would consider as a common perspective of an artist in today's culture.

In a more generic sense, artists create to bring attraction to and inspire thought on the subject of their art. This is the definition of "artist" that I would like to marry to the word "servant".

So what is a "Servant Artist"? What does their art look like?

A servant artists are artists whose art is created in such a way that it points to and honors the one it was created for. Their desire to create is not driven by attention or wealth, but rather it is moved by a humble, indebted, and grateful heart. They want the spotlight to be moved to the one they serve, the subject of their art. Their art points attention to the beauty of the subject. Their hope is to be a highlighter for the beauty of their master (the salt on the table, not the centerpiece).

The best example of this is seen the life of Christ. He humbled himself for our sake. He turned down earthly riches and power for our eternal hope. He came to serve not to be served. Always pointing to the Father in word and with demonstration through creativity and humility. He is exalted of God, not of himself. That is the image of a true servant artist.

God, give us the grace to follow your lead and live as servant artists; using artistic expression to bring your beauty and splendor to the forefront.

Hey Dan! While I can understand wealth not being a primary concern, do you think it's wrong for the servant-artist to make a living based on his craft? The bible seems to indicate it's good and right to pay pastors, who are also fully devoted servants.

Thanks for the questions. I don't think that it is wrong for someone to be paid for their craft, art, or services rendered.

I do think that more caution needs to be taken when our acts of service are all the sudden making money for us. We need to protect our hearts against greed, and make sure that we are still serving to serve and not "serving" to be served (ya savvy?).

I know for myself when money is introduced it makes it feel more like a job and less like a willing act of service. It doesn't take long for that money to become a necessary portion of your monthly budget. Then when you feel that it is time to move on, instead of moving on, you keep "serving" because you need that money to pay the bills.

I think it just takes extra grace from God to be able to get paid for your service and still have the strength to walk away when the right time comes.

I also think we need to watch out for temple marketing in our modern culture. Christ took a whip to the temple marketers because they where using God's name and presence for personal gain. We need to make sure that we are not doing the same.

God's grace be with us all.

Simply right on target. I have been wrestling with this subject for a while. For me it started many years ago when I read a couple of books about Keith Green and his ministry.

I have been troubled when I have gone to a "church" conference and the entrance way is filled with vendors all selling their spiritual wares.

I have often wondered what the church would look like and sound like if we gave away what we created from a servant artist mindset. I think that you have given all of us a glimpse.

Hey Dan,

Just got an email from you a couple of days ago. Now, I can't find it. At least, I think it was from you.

My feelings on this subject are clear. I buy Christian music and enjoy it, but truly believe that all artists should be creating for their Jesus first and therefore the local body. That local body would be greatly encouraged from that outpouring of creativity for Jesus.

Somehow in the big American corporate machine, they have even twisted worship into a commodity. It's almost as if we expect that by spending some money on the CD or downloading an MP3, our act of worship is half accomplished. We just need to sing along. Is that worship?

Then, I'm caught. Certainly I would like the worship music that I write to support my ministry. My wife, daughter and I livein East Africa in a small Muslim fishing village. Money coming in from selling my CD goes directly to supporting us in doing missions work here. Therefore, I suppose, I am a servant artist. But I am not selling many CDs.

Part of me certainly desires for greater sales of my CDs and more money, but something about pushing that seems to destroy the integrity of what I am trying to do.

Yet, then again, if I was able to "sell myself" better and push the product, I would make more money for support, but somehow lose something of my integrity in the process.

Does one need to sell out their humility in order to push their product?

I mean, when in the States, I would walk through the worship CDs and see all these faces of people on the covers. They were selling a look, an attitude, a style… Is that worship? No, that's marketing. How can the two co-exist without one twisting the other.

Here's my ideal:

1. Locally written worship music by teams or individuals.
2. Published and recorded to the highest possible standards available.
3. Distributed by word of mouth, out of local churches, christian bookstores or online communities as mp3s.
4. If it was a CD, then information would be provided on the CD telling how to support the ministry that created the music.
5. If it's an mp3, then possibly embedded information on the mp3 describing the support method.
6. All the music should be free from copyrights. I like the motto of one church: Our copyright is the right to copy!

I guess I'm an idealist, but I like to think of Acts. We should have our worship to share with all. If somebody wants to use a worship song, they should be able to use it. Do we live in America or do we live in the Kingdom?

Your idea for this website is dynamic and inspired Dan. Please do not stop. This is the right thing to do….

There are good parts of life and there are not so good part; mountains and valleys; victories and defeats. God gives us, through His spirit, a peace that is outside of our surroundings, and only dependent on Him.

This song is about worshiping, following, and honoring God when the circumstances are against us, and when the circumstances are with us. Because on both ends of the scale it is easy to forget our dependence on Him for peace, joy, hope, love, life...

In the valleys we doubt and questions, we are prone to feel that God has left us. On the mountaintop, we easily forget that God is our provision and our hearts can quickly fill with pride.

The place to strive for is not on the mountain and it's not in the valley. Our desire needs to be in a relationship with the living God. Because when we are in relationship with Him, the rest are just details.

Our flesh is weak even though our spirits are willing. Jesus' disciples slept while Christ was going through agony in Gethsemane. They certainly wanted to be there for Him, but their hearts of flash were weak and tired. This is song is about jump starting that heart of flesh into the love and passion we have in Christ. I find that this is a daily (if not bi-daily) thing I need to do to keep focus on the prize. This focusing is renewing our hearts and minds in Christ, and dying daily to ourselves. Of course we must submit to God and His spirit. This is what gives us the ability to renew. Acoustic Worship.

This song focuses on the tangible experience of God's embrace when our hearts are dry and broken, God's touch can bring warmth and healing.

We know that God does not stop with the experience of His presence, however it is in those moments that we are able to setup a flagstone, a marker in our journey to remember His presence and strengthen our faith.

The tag on this song is a side note that I might expand on later.

"With our hands in the air, a songs we will sing, all good comes from You, and to You all our praise."

This is something God is working in me. It's the idea that when we use our hands in worship, we are declaring that our value does not come from our works and the things we are able to produce with our hands. But rather our value comes from God, because he is the maker of all things that are good. So then to Him all the honor and praise belongs. More on this later...-Dan

Dan, I found your music on iTunes back in August of this year, and you have blessed me so much. I found your music when I needed God the most and your words brought me through a time of trouble and worry. I listen to one of your songs probably at least once a day. Hello Dan,

First, I want to say, love the music. I'm always on the look out for great praise and worship music. It's such a blessing to me. I heard about your music through Bible Study Podcasts, and I loved the first song I heard and now I'm hooked.

I do have a suggestion, if you don't mind. This is very powerful song. One that is completely captivating. It frustrates me at the end when it fades out. I'd love to hear a big BANG finish if possible. Of if you choose the fade out, fade out to just the guitar and let the word "Freedom" be stong and full at the end of the song.

Thanks for the encouragement and the comment. I agree with you about the ending, I feel the same way. I can't remember exactly why but there was a problem like the mic fell off the stand or something, and I had to fade at the point I did.

That's kinda the dilemma I find myself in. Time and cost is always of the essence. So sometimes I just post a song with some (or many) imperfections. As much as that urks me, it's either that or not post at all. I wish I had the time and resources to achieve a more finished sounding song. Hopefully I'll get a little better at the technical side of things as time goes on.

I just discovered your podcast and website and wonderful talent. I really appreciate and love all your songs. I've been playing and singing for three years, the three years that I've come to know my Savior, and music has been the dominant media that God has always used in my walk. I thank you for the tabs to the songs, I also write some of my own, but love to fall in love with someone elses creation and then play it also. Continue to do what you're doing, it's raw and beautiful sounding, it's clear you're a man after God, and I love how that is evident in your songs. dan the man! i am positive that you get generalized comments all the time about how people just love your music and how they appreciate what the Lord has been doing through you and how they just want to say thank you... well, that's pretty much what this is. i can't express how refreshing it is to not only find and listen to a delightful, Word-inspired, uplifting set of tunes, but for it to be free. the Gospel is free to anyone who will take of it. i realize musicians have to eat, too. so i know they need to make a living, but for you to generously give of the gifts that God has given you... it is very encouraging. keep it up brother. I decided to create a website community called ‘Kingdom Tunes’[www.kingdomtunes.com]. Basically just a community of artists that would like to offer their music for free in a similar way to More Rain.

There will be a regular podcast specifically just for the Kingdom Tunes site that will feature the submitted songs. And if an artist submits 5 or more songs then a unique podcast will be created for that artist.

There are two primary purposes for Kingdom Tunes.

1. To facilitate a community of servant artist who choose to offer their music as a free service to lift us others and build up the body of Christ [the Church] 2. To encourage each other in helping those in need of fresh water, food, and shelter in the world. The goal is to build up website traffic and leverage that traffic 100% to provide aid to those that need it.

Things are still in the makings, but the more artists we can get involved the faster we can make this dream a reality.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to not only share our songs of worship freely, but also to provide help for the less fortunate in the same effort?

Help spread the word.

In thinking about the tracks and this website I have some questions?

1. What do you define as simple and accessible? Does that mean single acoustic instruments and voice alone? Does it mean simple structure, but a possiblity of more complex instrumentation? Is the idea to make sure that a moderately proficient local worship team could lead worship with the music on KingdomTunes?

2. Part of my vision has been to provide worship musicians with an outlet here in Tanzania, East Africa. Their music could raise money for their church directly. Does KingdomTunes mix with that idea?

For a period of about 5 years I was the worship leader for my churches youth group. I remember having my first opportunity to lead for that group. I was so excited and passionate about experiencing God’s presence through worship. God’s presence was very real and very clear to me in the first year of leading. I remember instances where students would just come to the front as a sign of their devotion to God. I also remember seeing the hunger in those students’ lives to experience a relationship with God that was deeper than any program or religion could fill. They were hungry for intimacy with God, and it showed in the way they worshipped God at those meetings. They sang their hearts out.

After that year passed it seemed like every following year I was striving to recapture the passion and expressions of that first year. It’s funny because during that first year I remember wishing that I could make changes to the band and to the style of music we played. Then when the second and following years came I was able to implement some of those changes, but things felt like they got off center. So I tried to change back and still nothing was quite like the expression and passion of the first year.

Looking back after those 5 years I see now how even though our expression in music was never the same as that first year, God’s presence was increasingly with us. More and more students began to reach out to each other and to the community. There was a passion for God, but the students just weren’t as excited about the music. I wish I would have realized this in those last 4 years. Too much stress and wasted energy went into trying to re manufacture God’s presence through music.

It wasn’t until the last year that it started to sink into me. Before I was teaching and reinforcing that worship isn’t about the music, but I was still chasing that expression and I wanted other to chase it as well. Then that last year I remember a weight lifting off my shoulders as I realized that chasing God is more valuable than chasing the expressions and experiences of worshiping Him.

Expressions will fail, but a relationship with God endures. Seek God.

i can relate with your words and thoughts of which you have written about. i too have had to struggle through the like, looking back trying to re-manufacture and re invent past situations, only to come away with having felt exhausted and more confused. however i came to the conclusion over this long period of time, that worship means sacrifice. a sacrifical life, crucified to Christ our Lord is just that… worship. finally realizing with an understanding that the essense of heartfelt intimant worship is your relationship with Christ. Learning as a christian that our greatest adventure in life, our most challenging aspect as children of God is living as a christian in all of the battles that arrise [in this personal relationship]. i have found that it is here where the "rubber meets the road" and that christianity is best lived through our relationship in Christ Jesus our Lord and that this is worship. sacrificing everything in life is worship!

keep in mind dan… i have not written much on the blog/website for sometime. God has had to take me through a place "benching me" like an atelete is benched to place into perspective and to account for my actions that had been currently taking place.

First off, I found your podcast randomly one day and I've listened to the songs time and again since then and have been very blessed (praise God). Thanks for letting Christ use you and the gifts He's given you to bless others with music.

Secondly, I recently stepped down from leading worship at our church. Primarily to focus my energy on my year old marriage. Worship is still a very important ministry to me but we also found ourselves hitting what felt like roadblocks because congregationally people still made an issue of music styles.

Without getting too far into it, it's hard to keep things fresh in worship. It really is like marriage it takes work, consistency and energy. Fortunately, when we are reliant and in the Spirit He supplies what we lack.

Love the blog and the podcast. I expect to be a regular around these parts. I'd appreciate your comments on my site too if you ever feel inclined. Thanks, Dan.

I just sort of stumbled across your podcast and "accidentally" subscribed. Your music sat on my ipod for over a month, and while working out, I just happened to click play. I listened to the first few songs and fell upon "nothing compares". I must have played it ten times through and in the middle of the gym I started to cry. I completely felt God's unbelievable hugeness through your song. It was like God sent a message through you to me. I downloaded the chords and played it through myself over and over again. I cannot even tell you how thankful I am that God placed your music in my life. Thank you so much for channeling God's love through your music.
I am in the process of starting a contemporary service in our traditional church. I've been at it now for 3 months and would love to pick your brain about possibilities, being an old pro yourself.

Thank you for sharing tis with me. It's really amazing to see how God can use a half way recording to minister to his kids.

As for the contemporary service, just keep in mind the word SERVICE. I think that as a leader it can be really easy to forget that we are put where we are to be like Christ (to serve, not to be served). That should help curb some of the frustrations that come along with trying something new. Keep yourself, your team, and your church drenched in prayer and communion with God. Then as you feel God leading you into different expressions of worship, serve your church body with those expressions.

On the last post I attached the chord charts for anyone with interest.

The point of this whole podcast thing is really for me to give this stuff out freely. I don’t begrudge anyone for selling their music (whether it be for music or for art (if there is a difference)). It is just where God has me right now.

i can relate to the complexity of life and how it does at times keep us really busy. i have found that even as simple and carefree that i work towards keeping my life it still remains quite complex. it refer to it sometimes as a rubix cube. remember them from the 80's.
your music is very inspiring to me and i listen to it nearly every single day. i just place them on repeat on my ipod and begin my day at work. i am not sure if part of the reason behind you not being able to upload amy more music is because of lack of interest or lack of inspiration. i can relate; i have a blog called the MANNA project. i began writing posts and trying to promote it. then suddenly it was as if i lost all inspiration. i long to pick back up and contiue to write and hopefully allow it to really bless and challenage christians. however it is as if right now God is just taking this time to resonate Himself in my heart, my thoughts & my life. Allowing the Holy Spirit to completely marinate me and drenching me as if i have been swallowed and engulfed in a body of water. it is hard to trudge foward at times. and i do ot know if this is at all relevent however, i just wanted to send you a quick note to say all of that.

hey, i'd just like to say thank you. i'm in iraq, an it's not easy to get good worship music, but listening to some of these songs has really helped bring my spirit up. i really enjoy this song. so again, thank you and keep up the good work.

I wrote the chorus of this song about 7 years ago at College. I never liked the verses. I am finally satisfied with the verse/chorus. I had a bridge at one point but I tossed it due to the “Less is More” theory.

This is just a simple acoustic worship song to Jesus, Reinforcing that the name of Jesus is still worthy, even as so many use that name for selfish gain
